BN Group was engaged by Brisbane Airport Corporation to design the retail component of Brisbane Airport’s new commercial precinct. The retail centre is located alongside a new DFO surrounded on two other sides by commercial developments and a golf course. A central mall and Main Street creates a circulation loop with DFO and combines a pedestrian spine that interlinks all commercial uses within the precinct.

Community expectations of the role of architecture and the performance and competency of architects in the process of creating architecture are the starting points for all design. But these departures should always be critiqued. The outcome should be a built solution that is economical, sustainable, socially responsible and culturally significant. The result should always be rigorously evaluated. In between is a plethora of decisions, interactions, disagreements, comings together, reaching beyonds, shortfalls, ideas rejected and kept, mutated and grafted. Good design is a messy business and if it isn’t it should be suspect. A project never really starts and it definitely never ends. Architecture is a participatory pursuit. It is hard and it should be worthy.

Grounds Kent Architects (GKA) - was formed by Jack Kent and Martin Grounds in 1993 after successfully completing the Four Seasons Resort Bali, the outcome of an international competition, a project which was ultimately awarded the Australian Institute of Architects 1996 George Temple Poole Award “In Recognition of an Outstanding Achievement of Architectural Design”. Lyons is an ideas based and research led design practice which uses ideas as the operative means of generating the conceptual underpinnings for its architectural work. The firm’s projects are based on the concept of ‘form follows ideas’ rather than the orthodox rubric of ‘form follows function’. Ideas are sourced from a wide range of phenomena in contemporary culture; the contemporary city, new materials, found urban objects, digital technologies, new media, cultural theory, envisioned futures and ideas about sustainability. Through this multiplicity, Lyons creates an architecture which is less about a search for clarity and truth, and more about uncovering the lie, the ambiguity and the misrepresentations. The contemporary city, and the particular urban conditions of the Australian city, informs all of Lyons’ projects.
